Bridget Clark
Upper School English
AP Literature, Honors World Literature, and Modern Fiction
Bridget Clark, chairman of the Upper School English Department, teaches three courses for seniors. She also directs the Upper School's Thesis Writing Project. (See related story.)
Bridget has been a reader for the AP English test and for the new SAT. For the past 2 summers, she has been a judge for NCTE's (National Council of Teachers' of English) Achievement Awards in Writing.
Her education includes a bachelor of arts in English from UT Martin, and a masters in literature and writing from Memphis State University. Of her 27 years of teaching, 20 of them have been spent at USJ.
Bridget believes that effective learning requires effort from both the student and teacher, that the material will be more meaningful and personal to a student if he or she participates in his or her own learning experience.
Bridget also chairs the USJ Parents' Book Club. (See related story.)
Outside of the classroom, she enjoys reading (of course!), traveling, gardening, and shopping for her grandchildren. Before becoming a teacher, Bridget once dated the brother of one of Elvis’ girlfriends.
She and her husband, Danny, have two daughters, Catherine Clark Wells and Jessica Clark Lee. Both are graduates of USJ.
Teaching at USJ is important to Mrs. Clark. She says, “I love this school. It provided my children with what they needed in college and what they need now in life. I feel privileged to be a part of a school that can offer to other students what it gave to my own children.”
