Phyllis Gayton

Second Grade

After receiving her bachelor of arts from Nazareth College, and a masters from the University of Michigan in education, Phyllis Gayton began her journey of teaching. She taught full time for eight years in Michigan, New York, and Illinois before moving to Tennessee. She has substituted at various grade levels for five years, has taken two full-time substitute positions at USJ in second grade, and has been a full time faculty member in second grade for 21 years.

“I try to instill a love for learning in my classroom,” Mrs. Gayton said. “I feel each child is an individual and should be treated with love and respect.”

Other interests outside of the classroom include reading, cooking, and being a member of her church choir. Her two children, Jeff and Colleen, are USJ graduates. Her husband, Bill, is manager of National Sales for Pictsweet in Bells.

“I love the environment,” Mrs. Gayton says of USJ. “The students are highly motivated, parents are involved and supportive, and we have dedicated teachers who truly love the children they teach. We are blessed with a wonderful administration who highly respects their teachers and staff.”
