Jimmy Glosson

Upper School Spanish

Jimmy Glosson is in his 15th year at USJ teaching Spanish. He is the Language Department Head and teaches Honors Spanish I, Honors Spanish III, Honors Spanish IV, and AP Spanish Language.

He has a bachelor of arts in Spanish from the University of Memphis and a Masters in Education in Spanish and Instruction and Curriculum from Union University. Mr. Glosson has served as an AP reader, grading AP S;anish Language Exams for the College Board, and he is a member of the Tennessee Foreign Language Teachers’ Association.

In Mr. Glosson’s words, “Incorporating communicative and direct teaching methods in the target language, I aim to instill a love for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture in every student. Nothing gives me greater joy than to know that my students have succeeded in post-secondary study of Spanish and/or chosen professions, in which they will use their second language skills. Spanish is not just an academic discipline — it’s a lifelong skill that can open doors to personal and professional relationships, economic and philanthropic opportunities, and connect even the most provincial of minds and personalities to people groups, both past and present. Leading tomorrow’s generation through this door of opportunity is a privilege, of which I am reminded every year when I look into the “wide-eyes” of my Spanish I students as we begin the journey together, immersed in a language that will change their lives forever.”

Mr. Glosson spends his free time playing basketball, reading, singing, watching movies, and acting. He also serves as assistant director on USJ Upper School musicals, is a member of the Jackson Theater Guild, and is involved in music ministry at Englewood Baptist Church.

Mr. Glosson also coordinates and directs the Costa Rica Study Abroad Program, which will make its 10th trip to Costa Rica in 2012.

Since he and his wife, Julie, both teach Spanish, they raise their two children bilingually. Mr.Glosson enjoys being part of the “USJ family” and all of the support he receives.
