Betsy King
Upper School French, Middle School Spanish
Betsy King is the Language Department Head and teaches French for grades 9-12. She also teaches Middle School Spanish.
Her education includes a bachelor of arts in Spanish from Lambuth, and a masters in Spanish and linguistics from the University of Memphis. She has studied French at the University of Dijon in Dijon, France, and the Institut de Français. She also has done a graduate study in ESL at the University of Memphis. She is a member of the American Association of Teachers of French.
Her teaching philosophies include letting the students know that she genuinely cares about them and about teaching. "Let the students know that you genuinely like them, that you love your profession, that you are enthusiastic even passionate about your subject matter, that you are where and with whom you want to be!" Secondly, she adds, her goal is to "teach and model tolerance and appreciation for different cultures, service to others and compassion for people suffering."
Outside of the classroom, Mrs. King has even spent time working on a Dude Ranch in Florida for two summers.
Mrs. King enjoys working at USJ for many reasons: "The students, the freedom we have as trusted faculty members to deliver the subject matter, the encouragement to meet students' needs and requests (especially extra-curricular), the amenities that give the faculty a very high comfort level, and the parents I have come to know and their willingness to help on both a professional and personal level."
