Heidi McDaniel

1st-5th Grade Technology

Heidi McDaniel has been teaching at USJ since 1992. She has taught kindergarten, first, third, and fourth grade, and has began teaching technology since 2004.

Heidi has a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Lambuth University; she also has taken computer applications courses at Jackson State Community College. She is a member of the International Society for Technology in Education.

"I want everyone to be excited about the possibilities that are opening up to us as technology expands and improves," she says. "In technology classes, my goal is to use technology to teach students skills they need to be successful in school and in life with fun and meaningful projects. Whether it is drawing a picture using the Paint program or researching animals online, all activities have a purpose and build on skills learned in previous lessons. I use my website, Miss Heidi's Hub, to showcase work that is done and to allow learning to continue at home."

Her two children are Michael, a senior at USJ, and Maggie Rose, who has autism and is a fourth grader at Pope Elementary.

She likes teaching at USJ because of the family atmosphere, she says. "Everyone – faculty, staff, parents, and students – cares about this school and one another. USJ family are there to support each other in times of need and to celebrate when good things happen. I can't imagine finding a more supportive and caring environment to work in!"
