Carla Roach

Upper School Algebra III and Honors Algebra I

Carla Roach, who has been a teacher for 25 years, has been teaching at USJ for 11 years. She teaches Algebra III and Honors Algebra I. For the past five years, she has coordinated USJ's mentoring program for new teachers.

Carla has a bachelor of science in secondary education from the University of Memphis with endorsements in biology and math. She has completed additional certification and graduate courses at UT-Knoxville, Athens State College and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).

"I always try to present math concepts using a variety of approaches," she says. "Students learn math in different ways and I try to address their individual learning styles. I incorporate sayings, songs, and even dance to improve student retention and comprehension of the rules of mathematics."

Outside the classroom, Carla enjoys reading and corresponding with her out-of-state family and friends. Her husband, Eddie, is a mechanical engineer. Their daughter, Kathryn, a 2008 USJ graduate, attends Belmont University in Nashville.

To Mrs. Roach, the best thing about working at USJ is that "our students have a strong desire to achieve success and to apply what they learn to their future."
