Upper School English

Carol Ryan, in her 11th year at USJ, teaches 11th grade English, including Advanced Placement Language and Composition, and a 10th grade English course. Mrs. Ryan’s B.A. and M.A. Ed. degrees are from Union University; her teaching licensure is from Rhodes College. Mrs. Ryan also has graduate certification in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). In fact, Mrs. Ryan’s teaching career began as a TESL teacher in Plzen, Czech Republic in 1993, where she taught basic English conversation and composition in the law school at the University of West Bohemia.

Mrs. Ryan enjoys preparing her students for college-level writing. “In addition to positively contributing to a student's major program of study, a solid writing background enhances her or his ability to navigate the various discourses found in university settings.”

In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Ryan sponsors the SADD Club, the Operation Smile Club, serves on a number of senior thesis committees, and assists with the National Honor Society.

Mrs. Ryan’s community activities include serving on the Yates Foundation, a West Tennessee Healthcare foundation that assists families with autistic children in finding resources to better the child’s life and the family’s ability to provide care. She is also a member of First United Methodist Church in downtown Jackson where she is the third and fourth grade Sunday school teacher.

She and her husband, Phillip, have two children: Katherine, a USJ fourth grader, and John Carr, a USJ kindergartener.
