Report Cards

USJ is on a quarterly academic calendar and issues report cards four times a year.

Middle and Upper School
Students receive numerical and letter grades. In Upper School, of course, grades count toward a GPA and class standing that will be looked at by colleges.

Lower School
Quarterly reports in second grade evaluate each student in relationship to his or her own potential. Students receive an "E" for excellent performance, "G" for good, "S" for satisfactory, and "N" for needs improvement. Third and fourth grade students receive numerical averages.

PreK and kindergarten students are the exception: Teachers send parents a narrative report at the end of each semester to discuss the individualized learning taking place within the classroom. First grade parents get their progress report quarterly.

Figuring out the GPA:

Semester grades determine a student’s grade point in the Upper School. The semester grade is calculated by counting each quarter grade as 40 percent and the semester exam grade as 20 percent.

Honors courses are given a 0.5 weight and AP courses are given a 1.0 weight to the semester grade in calculating the 4.00 GPA, which includes all courses taken. Academic Honors and Class Standing are determined on the 100.00 GPA scale using number grades only, with the Honors and AP semester grade weighted 5 points. Since colleges request a GPA on the 4.0 scale, each student’s semester grades are converted to the following scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0.
