Campbell Library

MS/US Library

The philosophy behind the development of the library collection supports the students and faculty in all aspects of their academic work. The library collection and the services offered by the library staff support the work done in the classroom, enhance the concepts being taught, and expand the academic possibilities through the use of printed materials and on-line resources. Our goal is to also serve as USJ’s “public library,” as we serve an on-campus community of students and faculty. We support recreational use of the library for activities such as recreational reading and access to the Internet. The Campbell Library is a vital and exciting part of the school community.

Literary Luncheons - Luncheons introduce students to authors, illustrators

Some may frown at food in the library, but librarian Kathryn Weissenfluh has found a way to enrich the curriculum during lunch. This school year’s new Literary Luncheon series allows students to eat lunch while listening to noted authors read and discuss their works in the library.

Literary luncheons are a way for literature to be more than just the book in a student’s hand or the material studied in class, Weissenfluh said. “The literature comes alive when authors and illustrators talk about the inspiration for the book and the journey it took for the book to become what it is today. The luncheons add a supplemental experience to the academic day where students are free to bring their lunch to the library and enjoy, interact, and converse with the author.”

Authors and subject matter vary each month, with some luncheons being grade specific based on material being studied. “One luncheon featured Harry Lee Poe, author and distant relative of Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote the award-winning book, Edgar Allan Poe, An Illustrated Companion to His Tell-Tale Stories,” said Weissenfluh. “As the subject related to Grades 8 through 12, we had a tremendous response. We added an assembly in the auditorium where Poe spoke to Upper School and Eighth Grade students about Edgar Allan Poe’s life. The literary luncheon was reserved for faculty and students who were able to reserve a seat.”

Bryan Davis, author of the best-selling fantasy series Dragons In Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Echoes From the Edge, visits both Middle and Upper School students April 9. During the lunch, students can buy signed copies of his books. Next year’s series will include Hal Humphreys, who will discuss the writing and storytelling he does for National Public Radio.

“Students have been very positive about the experience,” said Weissenfluh. “The only drawback is having to limit the number of students since the library can only seat up to 80 students for lunch.” She hopes to expand the series to include all educational disciplines, saying “the possibilities for luncheons are endless.”
