Preparing for College

Preparation for college at USJ begins at the lower and middle school level with a strong math- and literature-based curriculum. USJ's college advisor begins working with students in Middle School, helping them make the best course choices and instilling in them the importance of making good grades. All students begin taking the preliminary college entrance exams during their freshman year. Not only is this good practice, it helps identify those students -- who with some extra help -- can earn National Merit recognition or receive good scholarships.

We are proud that 100 percent of USJ graduates meet college admission requirements. Their USJ education makes them competitive applicants at the most academic selective schools.

Working in the college advisory office are Carolyn Epps, director of College Advising, Stacey Puffer, Upper School Guidance, and Amy Buckley, College Advising assistant. Click on their name to email them.

College Advising forms

As juniors prepare for their first college advising meeting, they need to bring two completed forms to their meeting. One form is filled out by parents; the second is filled out by the student. You can download the forms in pdf format here.

School Profile

USJ's School Profile is sent to colleges along with a student's application. It explains the coursework, grading scale, and graduation requirements at USJ and provides a snapshot of the class scores, including SAT, ACT, and quintile averages. It also shows grade distribution for AP and Honors courses, AP scores, and a look at colleges that USJ graduates have been accepted at and then attended. To download a copy of the School Profile in pdf format, click here. You can view it in Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can also get a copy of the School Profile from the college advising office.

Advanced Placement Program

USJ offers 16 Advanced Placement courses, giving our students the opportunity to take one or more college-level courses in their areas of interest. Our strong AP program sets us apart from most other schools. By the end of their first semester of college, many USJ graduates are classified as sophomores or better because of the AP credits earned in high school. Learn more...

Wall of Honor

A special ceremony and reception on April 25, 2006, dedicated USJ’s Wall of Honor in the Upper/Middle School.
The Wall of Honor recognizes the more than 100 National Merit award recipients in USJ's history.
The project was funded by parents who wanted to honor the academic accomplishment of being a National Merit winner. Families contributing to the project were Tim and Jan Crossett, Jeff and Pam Kovalic, Bob and Shannon Gilroy, James and Jeanne Egan, Paul and Joanne Caudill, Bill and Sabrina DuVal, and Dwight and Joan Kaufmann.

The 2006 National Merit students honored at the ceremony were Cal Bowen and Karen Wong, finalists, and Kristen Currie and Russ Duck, commended students. Each year, the school plans a similar event to honor that school year’s National Merit students.
