2009 State Runners Up

After winning the Region, the boys golf team finished its 2009 season with a state runner-up championship. Members of the team, picture immediately below, left to right, are Weston Barrix, Mark Carson Harris, Jay Michael Patterson, Clay Harbin, John Wilson, Marshall Talkington, and Coach Jeff Manley. Marshall also was named to the All-State team.

Regional Winners: From left to right Weston Barrix, sophomore, Alternate; John Wilson, Sophomore; Clay Harbin, senior, Medalist; Jay Michael Patterson, senior, tied for fifth individually; Jeff Manley, Coach; Marshall Talkington, senior, tied for 3rd individually; and Mark Carson Harris, junior. The team finished with a combined total of 285, which was one of the lowest totals ever recorded for regional play in this division.

USJ Boys place first in the Regional Tournament in Millington with an unbelievable team score of 285! This was 12 strokes ahead of other teams. Senior Clay Harbin won 1st place in a playoff with a 69 and Senior Marshall Talkington with a 71 won 3rd. Both boys are on the All Region Team. Other boys playing were Senior Jay Patterson, Junior Mark Harris and Sophomore John Wilson and alternate Weston Barrix.

USJ Girls place second in region with Senior Amelia Ray tying for 2nd with an 80, and being named to the All Region Team. Sophomore Ann Elizabeth Lynch and Freshman Madeline Ray also are on the team.


Girls win 2008 state championship

The girls varsity golf team won the 2008 state championship with a team score of 308. The team won by a 15-stroke margin. Over the two days of play, Katherine Bell shot 77 and 72, with a total 149; Rachel Deaton shot 80 and 79, with a total 159, and Amelia Ray shot 87 and 84, with a total 171. Katherine also tied for 2nd place in individual title, making All-State. Clay Harbin, on the boys team, won 4th place in the state, shooting 74 and 72, with a total of 146. He also made All-State.

Coach of the varsity golf teams is Jeff Manley.

Middle School Golf Tournaments Spring 2009

The Middle School Boys golf team advanced to the State Championship in Franklin, TN. 

2006 Boys golf team earns state championship; girls team is state runner-up

A state championship topped off a great season for the boys’ golf team and coaches, Tom and Dana Talkington. Meanwhile, the girls team finished with a state runner-up trophy. The TSSAA/AA State Championship was at Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro.

The boys team was led by Seniors Tom Talkington, captain, and David Hopper; Juniors Bradford Carrington, Carl Diffee. and Scott Metcalf; and freshman Marshall Talkington. The girls team was led by Katherine Bell, Amelia Ray and Rachel Deaton.

After winning the District at Hidden Valley Golf Course and the Region at Wingfoot in Union City, the boys team shot an impressive two-day total score of 613 at state. This outpaced their nearest competitor and last year’s state champ, Good Pasture, by 18 strokes.

Players shot individual scores of the following: Carl, 148; Tom, 154; Scott, 155; Bradford, 156; and Marshall, 168. Four of USJ’s players finished in the top 21 in the tournament. Carl finished fourth overall to secure All-State honors.

Bradford, Scott, and Tom shot identical scores of 77 on the second day to secure the championship. This is the second state championship in the last four years for the boys’ team; the first occurred in 2002.

2004 Varsity State Championship

Natalie Edwards, a senior, won the state championship for A-AA schools in 2004. She shot a 72 her first day and 73 her second day to win by three strokes. The girls golf team finished a strong fourth, just seven strokes out of a tie for first place. Along with Natalie, team members are Christie Freeman and Amanda Thompson.


Congratulations to …

Rachel Deaton, who signed to play golf at Austin Peay State University.

• Amelia Ray, who signed to play golf at Bethel University.

Both are members of the 2010 graduating class.

Golfers Honored

Clay Harbin and Marshall Talkington received the distinction of being the 2009 Jackson Sun All-West Tennessee Golfers of the Year. Harbin received the same honor in 2008.
