Congratulations to Rachel Deaton, who won the Girls 15-18 Masters Division at the Golf Club of Tennessee Tournament of Champions in July. She shot a 152.

Hole in One
Katherine Bell, a senior on the USJ varsity golf team, scored her first hole-in-one on Monday, August 18, at the Farms in Dyersburg. The team was playing a match against Dyersburg. Katherine is the daughter of Larry and Cindy Bell. |

Both boys and girls teams advanced to the Region tournament May6 at Spring Creek Ranch, Collierville, TN. At Region, the USJ girls won 1st with Ann Elizabeth Lynch having the 2nd lowest score and making the All-Region Team. USJ boys were third in Region with John Wilson having the 3rd lowest score and making the All Region Team.

Varsity Golf at State Tournament
Congratulations to the varsity golf teams for doing so well in the state tournament in Murfreesboro. The boys team placed second in the state, shooting four strokes better this year than last year when the team won the championship. Scott Metcalf took home a third place finish for individual performance in the state tournament.

2006 Boys golf team earns state championship
A state championship topped off a great season for the boys’ golf team and coaches, Tom and Dana Talkington. The TSSAA/AA State Championship was at Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro.
The team was led by Seniors Tom Talkington, captain, and David Hopper; Juniors Bradford Carrington, Carl Diffee. and Scott Metcalf; and freshman Marshall Talkington.
After winning the District at Hidden Valley Golf Course and the Region at Wingfoot in Union City, the team shot an impressive two-day total score of 613 at state. This outpaced their nearest competitor and last year’s state champ, Good Pasture, by 18 strokes.
Players shot individual scores of the following: Carl, 148; Tom, 154; Scott, 155; Bradford, 156; and Marshall, 168. Four of USJ’s players finished in the top 21 in the tournament. Carl finished fourth overall to secure All-State honors.
Bradford, Scott, and Tom shot identical scores of 77 on the second day to secure the championship. This is the second state championship in the last four years for the boys’ team; the first occurred in 2002.
Middle School Girls Golf, Spring 2007
University School of Jackson’s Middle School Girls Golf Team came in second in the region, which earned the girls a trip to the state tournament. Left to right, the girls are Samantha Blanton of Humboldt, Shelby Jordan of Jackson, Ann Elizabeth Lynch, of Humboldt, and Emilie Lasher of Jackson. Ann Elizabeth made the All-West Region VI Team with a score of 109. Their coach is Dave Blanton.
2006 Varsity girls team goes to state
Once again, the USJ Bruins were on the road to Murfreesboro to compete for the golf state championship title.
The 2006 Lady Bruins golf team was lead by Sophomore Katherine Bell and Freshmen Rachel Deaton and Amelia Ray.
Rachel Deaton won the Region with a score of 82. Katherine Bell won first at District with a score of 78 and also fourth in Region. Amelia Ray finished second in Region with a score of 85 and fourth in District. As they readied for the state tournament, Rachel Deaton expressed their goals as "to go out there, have fun, and represent the school as best we can. Maybe even win."
Like the boys, the girls had a tremendously successful tournament by placing runner-up to Goodpasture by only 8 strokes with a score of 342. The girls were lead by Katherine (168), Rachel (174), and Amelia (185).
2004 Varsity State Championship
Natalie Edwards, a senior, won the state championship for A-AA schools in 2004. She shot a 72 her first day and 73 her second day to win by three strokes. The girls golf team finished a strong fourth, just seven strokes out of a tie for first place. Along with Natalie, team members are Christie Freeman and Amanda Thompson.

Middle School Boys Golf, Spring 2007
Members of the Middle School boys golf team were John Wilson, Will Slack, Dustin Hopper, William Wheeler, Blake Smith, J. L. Neisler, Seth Nichols, Weston Barrix, Nathan Craig, Rob Burzack, and Grant Mansfield.
Girls team members were Samantha Blanton, Ann Elizabeth Lynch, Emilie Lasher, and Shelby Jordan.
Congratulations
Congratulations to the girls golf team for placing 2nd in the Region Tournament. Our girls advanced to the state tournament. Ann Elizabeth Lynch made the All-West Region VI Team with a score of 109. John Wilson made the All-West Region VI Team and qualified for state as an alternate with a score of 85.

Golfers Honored
Scott Metcalf was named the Jackson Sun's 2007 Male Player of the Year for Golf. Scott was at his best with a 6-under-par 66 in the first round of the Class A-AA state tournament. He finished third overall with a 139. He won the Region 7 A-AA tournament with a 75 and has signed to play golf at Lambuth University.
Tom Talkington was The Jackson Sun’s 2006 Male Player of the Year for Golf. Tom helped the Bruins to the Class A-AA state championship. He was the regional runner-up. For the year, Tom averaged 35.3 per round.
Katherine Bell was the 2006 Female Player of the Year for Golf. Katherine placed ninth overall in the A-AA state tournament with an 83, the lowest score of any West Tennessee participant.
