A No. 1 ranking

After winning the Crockett County Invitational at the end of September, the varsity volleyball team was ranked no. 1 in West Tennessee by the Jackson Sun. USJ claimed the 2010 Crockett County Invitational with victories over Crockett County and Dyersburg in the Gold Division on September 25 at Crockett County High School.

"This was a team effort," USJ coach Chrissy Petty said. "I am excited for our seniors."

The Lady Bruins (18-3) beat Crockett County in straight sets 25-20, 25-17. Crockett County took early leads in both sets, but USJ came from behind to win both sets. USJ beat Dyersburg in three sets in its other Gold Division match. The Lady Trojans won the first set 26-24 before the Lady Bruins came back to win the second set 25-16 to force a third set.

During the tournament, the team also beat Milan 2-1, Halls 2-0, and South Side 2-0.

The 2009 Season

The Lady Bruins finished a fantastic season in 2009 with a record of 23-9. The girls played with such heart and intensity ... it was exciting to watch! The move to Division II was tough, but it allowed the team to face some tremendous competition, and the team improved greatly throughout the season.  It ended the season with a substate loss to Knoxville Webb, who then went on to be the State Runner-Up.  The team would once again like to send a huge "thank you" to their parents and all the "Rowdy Bruin Fans" for their support this year. Congratulations to Kayla Petty for being named to the All-Region Team and All-Region Tournament Team and All-State and All-West; to Abbey Orr for being named to the All Region Team — Honorable Mention and All-West; and to Halle Priester for being named All-West — Honorable Mention.

Volleyball 2008

The varsity volleyball team had an exceptional season that ended with the girls being runners up to the Region title. The girls were one game away from going to the state tournament.

After being District runners up, they qualified for Region; after coming in second place in the Region, they qualified for sectionals where they were defeated by South Side.

Kayla Petty, pictured, left to right, Katie Mansfield, and Abbey Orr were selected to the All-District Team and Region All-Tournament team. Kayla and Katie also were selected to the District All-Tournament team.

Fall 2005

With six seniors and seven juniors, the volleyball team was loaded with experience. The team went undefeated in the district, 11-0. The team did NOT lose a single game in a match. Coach Sue Hanson called the team, one of the best "I have ever coached. We are solid in every position, and I not only have six starters on the court I can count on, I have four that rotate in consistently from the bench. This group of girls works so well together, and you can see their chemistry on the court."

The team won the district, region and substate tournaments and finished at the state level.

Senior setter Joanna Suddath made school history in November 2005 when she signed with Wofford College in South Carolina, a Division I school, to play volleyball. She was the first volleyball player in USJ history to take her volleyball abilities to the next level!
