Summer Camps & Classes
Each summer, University School of Jackson offers several camps and classes. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, with registration unofficial until the registration form and deposit are received.

Send your $25 deposit (which goes towards the cost of the camp), made out to USJ, for each camp and/or class by May 31. (Driver's Ed requires a $175 non-refundable deposit.) Put the name of the camp on your check. Send it to Scott Phillipps, Upper School Director, 232 McClellan Road, Jackson, TN 38305. For more information, contact the Upper School Office at 660-1447. Registration forms also are available at the Upper School office.
Life Skills
• Driver’s Ed, June 13-17, 8 AM-2:30 PM, $375, Instructor: John Herriman (An accredited, one semester course which includes 30 hours of mandatory classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Students must be 15 years old before June 1, 2011.) Upper School Cafeteria. Driver's Ed class fills up quickly. To register, download the medical release form, fill it out and mail to USJ with your $150 nonrefundable deposit. Instead of filling out the registration form online that is used for other camps, Mr. Herriman requests that you download the attached pdf, fill it out, sign it and send it in with your deposit.
Academics
• Upper School English for Promotion: May 30-June 10(M-F), 8 AM-12:00 PM, 1:00-4:00 PM, rising grades 9-12 (non-USJ students accepted), taught by the Upper School English Department, $450. This course is intended for students who have not passed English during the regular school year and wish to advance to the next level of English or for students who wish to improve their English skills in order to move towards mastery of writing, composition, grammar, and literary interpretation. Grades will be assigned on a pass/fail basis.
• Middle School Study Skills: July 11 22 (MF), 8:30 10:00 AM for rising grades 6-8, $200, Instructor: Shay Young. This course is offered to any current or incoming middle school students. It is designed to teach students study techniques, organization, note-taking, time management, and planning. Students will create examples of outlines, notebooks, study cards and guides to keep. This course is available to the first 25 who register.
• Algebra Academy, July 1122 (MF) 10:30 a.m. to noon, $200 This course is available to rising 8th grade honors math students who want to prepare themselves for the rigor of 8th grade honors math, rising 9th grade CP students and rising 10th grade CP students who need preparation and remediation in the significant concepts of Algebra I.
• ACT MATH PREP (Algebra Academy II), July 1822, 4-6 p.m., $150. This course will refresh students of the mathematical material needed to be successful on the math portion of the ACT. Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry topics will be reviewed, and general test taking strategy will be discussed. Because this course will give a general review of 9th-11th grade mathematics, it also serves to be good preparation for students wanting to get a head start on their upcoming fall math course. Fine Arts
• Art-rageous Summer Art Camp: June 27- July 1; Session 1: 10:30 AM-noon or Session 2: 12:30-2 PM, $125, Prefer grades 1-5 (or at parent request to Instructor Libby Lynch). Activities include clay, tie-dying, beading, painting, and more! $125 covers all supplies and camp cost. Contact Libby Lynch for questions: 695-3127.
• Musical Theater Camp: July 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26.(Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday) from 5:30-7:30. $160, rising grades 1-8, Blankenship Theater, Instructor: Dr. Tammy Grant (Students will practice and perform a Broadway Junior Musical).
Athletics
• Softball: May 31-June 2 (T-R), 2:30-5 PM, $65, for rising grades 2-6, US Softball Field,. Instructor: Coach Brian Dunn and USJ players (Fundamentals, rules, and techniques of softball).
• Girls Basketball: June 13-16, 8 AM-noon, $90, for rising grades 1-8, Instructor: Lady Bruins Coach Tony Shutes and staff. Camp emphasizes on ball handling, shooting, agility, defense, and basketball fundamentals.
• Best of the West Soccer Camp: Boys and Girls, June 6-10th 9AM-noon for rising grades 1-7, and 5-8 PM for rising grades 8-12, $120 (includes camp t-shirt), For the 13th year in a row, Coach Leonardi will host one of the premier camps in West Tennessee. This camp is opened to every soccer player grade 1-12 living in West Tennessee. The camp will emphasize on developing and improving the soccer skills of each camper. Techniques such as shooting, passing, receiving, heading, dribbling, and goalkeeping are learned through individual and small group instruction and are reinforced through a variety of lively games. Beginning soccer players are welcome! You don’t need organized soccer experience to be a “Best of the West” camper. Beginners and experienced young soccer players will receive individual and group instruction from college coaches. Instructors: Chris Leonardi: Head girls and boys’ soccer coach at the University School of Jackson, Director of Coaching of the Jackson Soccer Club, USSF “A” license/ NSCAA Advanced National diploma; Gavin McKinney: Women’s head soccer coach at Cumberland University, USSF “C” license; Kyle Smith: Women’s assistant soccer coach at Hastings College (Nebraska), USSF “C” license; Gavin Smith: Head girls and boys’ middle soccer coach at the USJ, USSF “D” license.
Campers can register on the first day of camp, Monday, June 6, if they haven't already registered.
• Jackson National Golf Academy, June 20-24 (M-F), 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM for rising 1st 5th grades, 4 PM 7 PM for rising 9th 12th grades., $125 (includes T-shirt, range balls, and Friday tournament), Jackson National Golf Course, 307 Henderson Rd., Jackson, TN 38305. Campers will be divided by skill level, as well as age. Instructors: Tom Talkington, Sr., PGA Professional Emertius, Tom Talkington Jr., PGA Professional, Mike Vance, Teaching Professional, and volunteer college players. Camp emphasizes the fundamentals of golf, rules, VI Video Analysis, drills, and tournament for age divisions.
• Volleyball Camp: July 18-20 (M-W),. 8:00 AM-noon for rising 3rd -8th graders. $100 (includes camp T-shirt). Camp emphasizes fundamentals: passing, setting, hitting, blocking and serving. Instructor: USJ Volleyball Coaches Kimberly McNeil, Cori Rose, & Maggie Reinhard.
• Tennis: Boys and Girls: June 13-17, 8:30-10 AM., $90, rising grades 3-8, USJ Tennis Courts, Instructor: Hall of Fame Tennis Coach Don Newman, assisted by USJ tennis players. (Drills, strategies and match play for novice to intermediate players.)
• Football: July 11-14, 9-11 AM for rising grades 1-6; and 1-3 PM for rising grades 7-8, $100, US Football Field, Instructor: Coach Mickey Marley with Upper School and Middle School coaching staff. (This non-contact camp is designed for young men interested in learning the fundamentals of football. Players will be taught skills that are applicable for youth league, middle school, and high school.) For more information, contact coach Mickey Marley at 660-6740, 664-0812 or 695-1647.
• Boys Basketball: July 18-22, (M-F), 8-10 AM for rising grades 1-8. $100, Instructor: Coach Tony Winkler and USJ players. Camp will emphasize basketball fundamentals including ball handling, shooting, rebounding, and passing while also including scrimmages and camp tournaments. Campers must register by July 1 to determine whether the camp will take place.
• USJ Running Camp: June 20-24, 9:00 AM-10:30 AM for rising 6th-8th grades and 11:00 AM-12:30 PM for rising 9th-12th grades, $90, meet in Upper School Foyer. Instructor, Head Upper School Cross Country and Assistant Track Coach and former varsity runner at Union University. The USJ Running Camp provides quality instruction on the basic and foundational principles associated with cross country running at the middle school and high school levels. Athletes will be given instruction on proper running mechanics, sleep patterns, weight training, as well as race strategies and appropriate psychological preparation for training and racing.

Camp Bruins, Summer 2011
if you are planning to enroll your child in Camp Bruins this summer, applications need to be turned in to Debbie Ford by Friday, April 29. Applications are available at the reception desk in the Lower School Lobby.
This year, we are offering options of 2-, 3-, or 5-day enrollment for Camp Bruins.
We are really excited about Camp Bruins! We are working hard to plan fun activities for the campers! We will have water days, jumpers, art classes, gym activities, and other fun activities in the classrooms. If you have any questions, please call Faith Dixon at 467-1298, or you can send an email to usjdaycare@usjbruins.org.
All applicants must …
• Be enrolled for the 2011-2012 school year
• Complete the enrollment agreement
• Complete a medical emergency form
• Pay a $50 non-refundable registration fee
