Facilities
Our student-athletes have access to unparalleled athletic facilities, which are spread across 130 acres and six buildings.
The athletic program at University School of Jackson is a member of TSSAA’s Division II, one of the strongest in the state of Tennessee. USJ’s Middle and Upper Schools currently field 37 teams in 13 different sports. USJ has won State Championships in girls’ soccer, girls’ softball, boys’ baseball, and boys’ tennis. Each year, USJ teams are well represented in regional and state tournament play. Our sports complex and athletic facilities are among the finest in the state.
USJ focuses on overall wellness by offering a strength and conditioning coach and facilities for our athletes and students. Physical education classes start as early as two years old in the Lower School, which serves as an introduction to organized sports. USJ Lower School students have the opportunity to participate in a number of sports programs including basketball, football, tennis, soccer, and gymnastics.
The school’s commitment to athletics results in high sports participation at all grade levels. Lower School students join community recreation leagues. Students have physical education classes through eighth grade. Varsity coaches offer camps and after-school instruction for Lower School students.
Dement Gymnasium
The Upper and Middle School school campus share two gyms with full size courts, but the Dement Gymnasium is where our boys and girls’ basketball and volleyball games take place. With plenty of seating for our Bruin fans and visitors, the Dement Gymnasium also hosts outside tournaments and Bruins athletic camps.
Soccer Field
Our soccer field has also seen recent improvements with new bleachers and a retaining wall that brings our fans closer to the playing field to enhance visibility. Covered areas were built for both home and visiting teams. Along with a new seating area, a press box was built with storage for team equipment.
John H Weston, Jr Golf & Tennis Center
The University School of Jackson recently announced the addition of the John H. Weston, Jr. Golf & Tennis Center. The 3,000 square foot facility, currently under construction, will boast golf and tennis locker rooms, two Trackman Golf Simulators, a putting green, restrooms, coaches’ offices, and a spectacular view from the covered front patio overlooking the eight tennis courts, also new to campus.
Kirkland Field at Carlock Stadium
When the Bruins step out under the Friday night lights, they do so on a newly renovated turf field equipped with striping for a soccer field. Schools from across West Tennessee make their way to Kirkland Field for our new track that surrounds the football field. Along with our new improvements, we have an amazing 11’ x 21’ Jumbotron in the midst of our scoreboard.
Betty & Donald Newman Championship Courts
The new Betty & Donald Newman Championship Courts is the latest addition to the Imagine More Campaign. The new Bruin tennis complex includes an expansion in the number of tennis courts from six to eight, in addition to the new location adjacent to the USJ Lower School. A Golf & Tennis Complex being built next door will house lockers for our tennis players.
Turf Room
Located on the second floor behind the Dement Gymnasium, students have access to an indoor turf and strength and conditioning room. This provides our athletes with year-round opportunities to enhance their skills.
Lady Bruins Facility
The $1 million facility includes approximately 6,000 square feet and consists of two varsity Lady Bruins locker rooms, three middle school locker rooms, a dedicated middle school restroom, and a dedicated varsity restroom fitted with showers and vanity tops. The custom wood lockers have individual electrical and USB charging ports in each locker. The energy-efficient, state-of-the-art facility is constructed of long-serving brick, block, and steel. Also, included is a coaches/training lounge and two multi-use visitor locker rooms with separate outside access.
Overton Stadium
The newly renovated baseball stadium has a new and improved seating area and press box. With covered dugouts and an 8’ x 15’ Jumbotron, our stadium is welcoming to Bruins fans and guests. Players have direct access to the locker room with an indoor practice area that has 2 full bullpens and 3 cages, along with hitting/pitching Rapsodo® technology for player development.
