After School Care and Camp Bruins Director Faith Dixon and Assistant Development Director Cathy Garrett recently announced that they would leave USJ at the end of the school year. Both of these administrators have contributed substantially to the growth of their programs and have served USJ well. We will miss them for their kindness, leadership, and steadfast support of USJ and its students, faculty, and staff. Two current staff members have been asked to take on portions of their roles, as explained below.
I am pleased to announce that Melissa Zerfoss has been appointed to the newly-created position of Director of Auxiliary Programs, effective June 1. This position will oversee all of the various after school and summer activities for students ages two through twelfth grade, including After Care, Summer, and Conservatory Programs. She will also work toward further development of additional revenue streams regarding the use of USJ’s property and facilities while expanding current programming. In addition, Melissa will coordinate the financial and record-keeping aspects of the development office and continue her work in communications.
Melissa earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Mississippi. She joined the staff at USJ in 2011, after many years as an active parent volunteer. Since that time, she has served in various roles, including Summer Programs Director, Director of Alumni Relations, and Assistant to the Head of School. With more than a decade of office administration experience, Melissa also has six years of experience in Human Resources. Melissa and her husband Matt (’90) have two children. Nick (’18) is a
junior at Union University, and Zach is a senior in high school who plans to attend Ole Miss in the fall.
I am also excited to announce further that After School Care staff member Laquita Robinson has accepted the position of After School Care and Camp Bruins Coordinator, effective June 1. Laquita will run the day-to-day operations of After School Care and Camp Bruins and work closely with Melissa Zerfoss as she oversees the department's financial and long-range planning.
Laquita earned her Bachelor and Master of Social Work degrees from Union University and is currently working toward completing her Master of Business Administration at Union. She has worked for USJ in both After School Care and Camp Bruins for the last three years. Laquita also has ten years of experience working as a preschool teacher in various childcare centers, including Forest Heights United Methodist Church Preschool and West Tennessee Healthcare’s Therapy & Learning Center. She looks forward to expanding the current After School programming to reflect more of the activities available to Camp Bruins students.
Outside of work, Laquita enjoys traveling, serving the community whenever possible, and spending time with her family. She has been blessed with seven siblings and ten nieces and nephews. When asked about her family, Robinson said, “My mom is the sweetest person and is also the most kind-hearted woman I have ever known. She is my hero! My dad was the cornerstone of our family and has always been one of my biggest fans.”
Director Faith Dixon shared this about who will take over her various roles. “Laquita is one of the best Assistant After School Care Directors I have had in the last fourteen years. I know that she will be excellent at running the program, especially with Melissa handling the financial and parent-relations side. The two of them together is undoubtedly the best outcome for the future of After School Care and Camp Bruins.”
Please join me in congratulating both Melissa and Laquita on their new roles at USJ.
