The University School of Jackson is pleased to announce Michael Stroup has been named the Athletic Director for the Bruins. Michael has served as the USJ Head Football Coach since 2017 and will continue in that role along with his new duties. USJ’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Nick Stamper, will serve as the Assistant Athletic Director.
“Michael and Nick have done a great job serving as interim Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director over the past few months, and have been proactive and responsive to coaches, parents, and student-athlete needs,” says Head of School Stuart Hirstein.
With over 15 years of experience in athletics, Michael has served in many capacities including: Head Football Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Scotts Hill, Assistant Head Football Coach at McNairy Central and at Adamsville High School, Assistant Director of Camps at Delta State University, and most recently served as Interim Co-Athletic Director and as a faculty member at USJ. He was also named the 2016 West Tennessee Coach of the Year.
Michael holds a Master of Education in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Delta State University. He and his wife Holly have two children at USJ, Knox and Jackson.
“It’s an honor and privilege to become the Athletic Director at USJ. I am eager to work with such a great athletic staff and I look forward to what the future holds for this program and all of our student athletes,” says Coach Stroup.
Assistant Athletic Director Nick Stamper, a graduate of Lambuth University, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreational Sports Management. He was named as an All-American and to the Mid-South Conference Team during his college football career, which spanned both the University of Tennessee at Martin and Lambuth University. He went on to play for the Baltimore Ravens (NFL), the Montreal Alouettes (CFL) and the Memphis Xplorers (AFL).
He has also worked as an assistant to the Seattle Mariners since 2010 and with the local Jackson Generals, Seattle’s Double A baseball team, testing team members and implementing sports performance training. Stamper is certified by the National Association of Speed and Explosion, USA Track & Field and USA Weightlifting.
Nick recently served as Interim Co-Athletic Director while maintaining his current position as faculty member and USJ’s Strength and Conditioning Coach. He and his wife Renee have two children at USJ, Nick and Bradley.
“I am thankful for the support of my family and the support of the USJ community. I look forward to working effectively as a team to continue to improve the positive efforts going forward as we imagine more for our students at the University School of Jackson,” says Nick Stamper.
Both Stroup and Stamper will take on their new roles effective immediately.
